Black skimmers earned their name from their unique beaks and foraging style. They fly low over the ocean and dip in their large lower beaks to scoop up prey. And, in spring, males deliver their quarry to potential mates. This courtship behavior is called a fish presentation. I was able to watch this behavior in action at Wrightsville Beach, NC, in 2025. (Unfortunately for this suitor, another skimmer interrupted just after the female took the fish! Good for her, though.)
